Balancing family, work and everything in between: How to handle the stress of the Holidays

As a mom of two pre-teen boys, I know all too well how balancing leadership roles and the demands of the holiday season can be challenging, but with some thoughtful planning and self-care, it’s possible to manage stress and enjoy the festivities. Here are some holiday tips for moms, dads, caregivers, grandparents, etc. – basically anyone looking to get it all done all whilst still making it magical and memorable:

Plan and Prioritize:

  • Create a holiday schedule that includes work commitments, family events, and personal downtime. Downtime is KEY! Don’t let it pass by without enjoying the quiet moments, even if it means sitting by the light of the tree with a cup of tea (or Bailey’s) after everyone else has gone to bed. 
  • Prioritize tasks and focus on high-impact activities both at work and home.

Delegate Responsibilities:

  • Delegate tasks at work and home to lighten your load. Empower your team members and involve family members in holiday preparations.

Set Realistic Expectations:

  • Be realistic about what you can accomplish during the holidays. It’s okay to say no to additional commitments that may add unnecessary stress. Time Management:
  • Efficiently manage your time at work by setting clear goals and deadlines. Use productivity tools to stay organized and on track.

Communicate with Your Team:

  • Keep open communication with your team about your availability and any potential changes in the work schedule during the holiday season.

Create Boundaries:

  • Set clear boundaries between work and home life. When at home, focus on family and personal time without letting work distractions take over.


  • Prioritize self-care to manage stress. Take breaks, get enough sleep, exercise, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Watch all of those Holiday movies you want to watch! 

Celebrate Achievements:

  • Acknowledge and celebrate both personal and professional achievements during the holiday season. Reflect on the positive aspects of the year.


  • Be flexible and adaptable. Things may not go as planned, and that’s okay. Embrace the imperfections and focus on the joy of the season. It’s also okay if you are a last minute shopper – there has to be both types in any setting! 

Technology Detox:

  • Consider taking short breaks from technology to be present with your family. Turn off work emails and notifications during designated family time. Scrabble anyone? 

Seek Support:

  • Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues for support. Share your feelings and concerns, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

Reflect and Set Intentions:

  • Take some time to reflect on the year, express gratitude, and set positive intentions for the upcoming year.

Remember, it’s essential to find a balance that works for you, and don’t be too hard on yourself. The holiday season is a time to enjoy with loved ones, so make sure to prioritize what matters most to you. The holidays are not a competition or an image you see on social media – remember that and focus on what matters most and what makes you happy.
